Harrison: “There’s a storm in my brain!”
Holly: “My boyfriend broke up with me…” In response Tahlia: “On the biscuit phone!”
This year we have been invited to individually enter poems into the Kyneton Show. Here is a poem we have come up with as a whole class. Hope you like it!
A country Show
A country show
on grassy footy field
and rocky road
people wandering
kids on rides
germy money
burnt sausages
waiting for a train.
or working frustrated
until someone pukes
vomit in their show bag
disgust and avoidance
crying all embarrassed
are
you
okay?
Connor “Miss. Paull, do you know what the Legend of Zelda is?”
Miss. Paull “Ocarina of Time!”
Connor to class in general “she knows it pretty well…”
On Thursday 13th October we had a whole class discussion about the following news item.
Captain of ship grounded off New Zealand coast arrested
New Zealand’s authorities arrested on Wednesday the captain of a container ship that ran aground off New Zealand’s north-eastern coast, causing amajor oil spill, the Herald Sun newspaper reported.
The container ship, the 236-meter Rena, struck a reef off New Zealand’s port of Tauranga on October 5. Between 130-350 tons of fuel oil is thought to have leaked from the vessel.
The newspaper quoted the country’s Transport Minister Steven Joyce as saying the arrested captain, a Filipino national, would appear in court later in the day on charges of “operating a vessel in a manner causing unnecessary danger or risk.”
The captain faces a fine of up to $10,000 or a prison term of up to 12 months if found guilty, the report said.
The ship has more than 1,300 containers on board, including 11 which are believed to contain hazardous materials.
The oil started washing ashore at local beaches on Monday, where large numbers of dead birds and fish have been seen, the paper quoted local residents as saying. Local authorities say it would take several weeks to clean up the shoreline.
Here are our thoughts, ideas and suggestions.
It is a problem because it is polluting the water where animals live and killing them. The oil suffocates the animals by covering their skin (where oxygen is normally absorbed by fish) or getting into their lungs and poisoning them. Animals can’t get away from the oil invading their habitat. It also destroys the reef. The coral is damaged and this means the sharks, sea turtles, fish and birds have less environment to live in. The effects of the oil spill could last for years.
To help prevent this happening again we could make the sides of the ship taller. We could get other boats to help clean up the rubbish, then scoop oil out of the water. We could reuse this oil possible as some sort of fuel but this would produce MORE greenhouse gases! Maybe we could store it safely somewhere or make the oil into something useful.
We could help the animals caught in the oil spill by washing them with soapy water or wiping the oil off with towels. Then we could put them in clean water to restore oxygen to them. We could place them in a pseudo- habitat to monitor their health before releasing them into the wild. We would not have too much human contact with them because otherwise they might become too depended on humans to feed them.
With the animals which have already died we could clean them up so that the oil on their bodies doesn’t harm another animal or pollute the environment.
We think that cleaning sharks which have oil on them could be difficult because it could be dangerous.
On Tuesday 13th September Grade 5 and 6 celebrated Roald Dahl Day, as well as the 50th anniversary of James and the Giant Peach. We started off with a True or False Quiz which had questions like “Roald Dahl’s favourite colour was yellow- true or false?” Carmen Smith won the quiz, taking home Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach” as her prize. Next, Grade 5 and 6 had to rearrange words to create Roald Dahl’s famous book titles. The winning team created four famous titles. Finally, we created crazy creatures in the spirit of Roald Dahl and gave them crazy names. We also learnt a little bit about Quentin Blake, who illustrated many of Roald Dahl’s books. Students were rewarded with some Wonka lollies for having good attitudes and for answering questions correctly. Our Roald Dahl celebration was lots of fun for both students and Miss. Paull. In the words of Roald Dahl, “A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.”
This week we had our first You Can Do It Lesson. We discussed how we can be happy and successful. We also discussed that by doing our Personal Best we will reach our goals and succeed. Students answered some questions about their own successes and had to take home a parent success sheet to complete.
Last week for homework Miss. Paull set different tasks for everyone to complete. Here are some student’s work below:
Braiden- Footy Report
A couple of weeks ago we played football against South Kyneton. We lost by 100 points and I got an award for playing a good game of footy. From the award I got a free milkshake and small chips. I think that was the best footy match of the year.
Chelsea- Song Review
Taylor Swift- Back to December
I chose this song because Taylor Swift speaks clearly and it is easy to listen to and understand. She has a nice voice and she has no rude words in any of her songs.
The song is about Taylor and her boyfriend when they were together and when they broke up. The song is about how she treated him and how she would like to be back with him.
She didn’t realise what she had until it was gone and she is sorry because now she misses him.

Carmen- Science Night
On Thursday the 18th our school had a Science Night in the new building. The Science Night started at 6:30 pm. At 6:45 Carolyn walked out into the main room and started to say a welcome to everyone. David, Sol and I had to run out when she was talking and we had to yell “Carolyn, Carolyn! We did it. We made a rocket!” Carolyn didn’t believe us and said “Well show me the rocket then!” I pulled a teabag out of my pocket and showed it to everyone, but of course Carolyn still didn’t believe us so we took off the tag, the string, the staples and all the tea out of it. That was the rocket but of course Carolyn still didn’t believe us so Sol stood the empty teabag up on the table and David pulled out a box of matches and set the top of the teabag on FIRE! When the fire got close to the bottom of the bag it started to lift off the table and it floated all the way up to the roof! It was really fun and that was only the start of it!
There were a lot of activities but I didn’t get enough time to do them all. The first activity I did was a volcano one where you got some vinegar and bicarbonate soda and put them both in a cup that was in a tub and it fizzed up!
The second activity I did was one with smarties, water and a shallow plastic plate. First you had to put some water into the plate up to the very top. Then you put in four different coloured smarties where the twelve, six, nine and three on the clock would be and then you just had to watch as the colour of the smarties went into the water and when all the colours got to the middle none of them mixed. It was so pretty, sort of like a rainbow.
After that I went and got some flittering paper and drew some circles around the inside of it and then got a plastic cup and put a little bit of water into it and put the filter paper in and I watched the colours of the texta change.
The next activity I did as one where I got a snap lock bag and put some glue in it, and then I got some food dye and put one drop in each corner of the bag. I chose blue and red. Then I just had to mix them together.
The next activity I did was one of my favourites. It was where you got to make some goo! So we had a large bowl in front of us and we had to put some cornflower and water into it. Then we had to choose what colour we wanted it. I picked green so it would look like slime. Then we just had to mix everything together with our hands! It was heaps of fun!
The last activity I did was very…how should I say this? A very tasty one! We got a marshmallow and put some different drops of food dye n it and then the teacher running it put the marshmallow in the microwave for eighteen seconds. While the marshmallow was in the microwave we got to watch it! Would you like me to tell you what happened? Of course you do. So while I was watching it the marshmallow in the microwave expanded! It got very big and then when the teacher turned the microwave off it flattened but it was still very wide and we got to eat the marshmallow off the paper that it was on! It was VERY delicious!
Shaelee- Twilight Review
Twilight, the best of all movies. The best of all books and the best of the series. Jacob, the buff werewolf. Edward, the fast vampire. Bella, the human soon to be a vampire.
Twilight is about a girl called Bella. She goes to live with her Dad in Forks while her Mum and her Mum’s boyfriend Phil go on a holiday to Phoenix. Bella wasn’t very close to her Dad and she hadn’t stayed with him since she was four years old. She meets up with her old friend Jacob. When she was younger they used to make mud pies and play doctor. It was too bad he didn’t go to the same school as she was going to.
Bella is a pretty girl with brown sort of curly hair and brown eyes. Bella made friends really quick with Mike, Eric and Jessica on the very first day. She fell in love with a guy called Edward. He was paler than she was. He ends up saving her from a car crash when a guy comes flying in his car. Bella flinches and covers her face. Edward was all the way over the other side of the car park but he still made it and pushed the van. He made a dint in it; Edward had saved Bella by pushing an actual van out of the way.
Closer to the end Bella finds out that Edward is a vampire. She goes to meet his family. They all like her and they know she knows their secret, except for Rosalie, but she is just jealous of Bella.
I love Twilight because of the action and the romance. Also because there are no bits that would let you get up and make a drink. It’s too interesting to even look at the ground without missing something amazingly original. It’s well known and everyone has a side, either Edward or Jacob. I’m Edward because he is handsome, pale, and dreamy.
Holly- Stunt Driving
On the 21st of August, we went to a Bacchus Marsh to do a thing where you do stunts in a special car. First we had to do the most boing thing in my life: The car trip.
It was quite fun because mum was sitting in the front with us. We showed her all of the photos and videos we had on our iPod touch. I think she got annoyed with us shoving iPod touches in her face. We were in Michael’s car. He is a very scary driver. I got car sick half way through the trip.
Finally, we got to Bacchus Marsh and we parked in the parking lot and when we got out of the car there was a big hill we had to climb. I fell over and got four prickles in my hand. We all struggled to get up the hill. We stood on the hill for a little while watching the stunt cars driving. Mum went to ask were Michael needed to be and she said Michael had to be in the bus at 12.15 for the briefing.
After that, we waited in the barriers and I just noticed that my Aunty and Uncle had arrived and were on the hill with my dad! I waved but waited at the bus as there were seats and it wasn’t as dusty. I left and went back up the hill. Then dad asked me to let mum know that my Aunty couldn’t get down the hill because of the boots she was wearing.
Aunty Cyn ended up walking the long way around to come and sit with my mum at the bus. Finally, it was Michael’s turn. That was good as I was bored. Michael’s first activity was drifting in a really cool Ford ute and it was fun to watch. Next it was his turn in the stunt car that could drive on two wheels! He had two goes. It looked scary. The last activity that Michael did was stunt driving. He learnt how to skid across the ground in circles.
We drove back to Bacchus Marsh and decided to have a meal at the hotel but they had closed the kitchen so we had drinks instead. I didn’t like my drink as it had too much raspberry cordial and was too sweet.
We said goodbye to Aunty Cyn and Uncle David and we left to go home. We stopped at the Gisborne Hotel and had some dinner. I loved the food. I had grilled fish with vegies. We went home and made Mum’s birthday cake it was a Pavlova with strawberries, kiwi fruit and peaches. Yummy! We watched the final episode of The Block. Poly & Waz won. They had 115 thousand dollars. Then off to bed we went. Tomorrow we have school.
Nathan- Holes book review
Title: Holes
Author: Louis Sachar
Year published: 1998
Place of publication: USA
I think Louis Sachar is a great writer.
Main characters
Stanley Yelnats IV: He was punished for a crime he did not commit. He was a caring person who loved his parents. He was also brave when it came to helping his friend. He was bullied at school because of his size.
The warden/ Mrs. Walker: She was the descendent of the Walkers who killed Sam, the onion seller and later, his beloved Kate Barlow. She believed that Barlow had buried treasure in the dried lake, the stash of her years of being an outlaw. She used the boys in digging holes in the ground, hoping to find the tressure. She was ruthless and violent.
Zero/Hector Zeroni: H was a homeless Black boy who stole Clyde Livingston’s sneakers. He became Stanley’s friend. He learned reading from Stanley, while helping him dig holes. Together they found Kate Barlow’s treasure which was actually the suitcase robbed from Stanley’s great-great grandfather of the same name, which contained document that made both of them wealthy.
Stanley came from a long line of Stanley Yelnats which seemed to have befallen under a curse originating from their Latvian forefather who reneged on his oath to carry the Gypsy Madame Zeroni up a mountain. This Stanley had the worst misfortune of being accused of stealing a celebrity’s pair of sneaker and was sentenced to Camp Green Lake for behavioural adjustment. It was a desolate camp where poisonous lizards could kill a person with one bite.
My opinion is that it was a really good book. I rate it 10/10.
On Tuesday the 23nd of August our class participated in The River Story. We used a big, clear bucket of water to represent the river and then as we listened to the story we added all kinds of things to the water. Here are some of our responses to this activity below.
1. How do you feel about the change in the colour an the look of the river?
Shaelee: I felt pretty sad for the river because we expect animals to live in it when it’s really dirty. We may not see the rubbish, but most likely it’s there, under the water. The look of the river started off all nice and fresh, then people started littering in it and it became a deadly home for animals, considering they can easily get their head caught in a plastic bag and suffocate.
Piper: I feel very disgusted because sometimes I swim in the river. The colour is very yucky because of all the rubbish and that red stuff.
Holly: Well, I feel like we are polluting the river. If we don’t stop polluting the water we won’t be able to drink it. The animals won’t be able to drink it and they will die.
Carmen: It makes me feel sick to know that people are putting all that horrible stuff into the river. I would not like to live around that river because my family and I would probably get very sick.
Chelsea: Well I feel disgusted becuase everyday someone or something is swimming in it and all the animals could get very sick and die. I would not like to swim in it because you could stand on stuff or very badly hurt yourself.
2. How would you feel about drinking or swimming in this water?
Holly: I didn’t actually know all that stuff is really in the river right now. Swimming and drinking it would be disgusting! All of that rubbish. It’s horrible!
Tyler: Fine but if I knew I would stay away becuase the water will go in your body and damage important cells.
Carmen: It wouldn’t feel very nice because if I was swimming in it then there would be lots of rubbish flating in the water all around me. I would hate to drink that water because it would taste really bad with all the vinegar, bicarb and dishwashing liquid. It would also make me very sick if I swam or drank the water.
3. Do you think this is like the real situation- is this how the pollution might occur in our river?
Connor: No! I don’t want this to be real!
Unnamed: Yes I do think this is happening in the real world as well because I’ve seen people do this to the rivers.
